“Our conception of diversity is not just incomplete but also often radically ineffective”

Matthew Syed

We talk a lot about the importance of diversity and diverse perspectives, but what does this mean in practice? In this session, we have been inspired by Matthew Syed’s book “Rebel Ideas; the power of diverse thinking” to consider what makes us unique and how we can think differently about the world around us to tackle those “wicked problems” collectively.

“If we are intent upon answering our most serious questions, from climate change to poverty, and curing diseases to designing new products, we need to work with people who think differently, not just accurately.”

We will start the session with an introduction and summary from our team, then participants will be put into smaller groups to allow for deeper reflection and conversation.

For inspiration and interest, we have shared some optional suggestions to read, watch and listen to prior to the session to inform your thinking – or you are welcome to come as you are with your own unique perspective!

The Leading to Change Diversity Coffee Connect programme aims to provide a safe learning space to connect with others across the sectors to have important, informal conversations about equality, diversity and inclusion.

The sessions are open to leaders at all levels and stages across social care, social work and health in Scotland.
